Facts

  • Head lice do not jump nor fly. They walk, run or crawl quickly from hair to hair.
  • Head lice need a blood meal every 3-4 hours and the warmth of a human scalp for survival. Off of the human host, lice rarely survive more than 24 hours.
  • Once separated from the head, eggs must hatch within 24 hours. Thus only eggs on the head should cause concern.
  • Lice leave a scent behind when they feed which attracts more lice.
  •  No one is immune. Lice aren’t prejudice.
  • Lice prefer a clean head of hair, but will live on clean or dirty hair.
  • Certain people seem to attract lice.  Many factors are involved, blood type and Rh factor are among them.
  • Head lice do not live on pets.
  • Lice happen all year round.  There is not a season for lice.
  • There is less than 2% chance of getting head lice from the environment.
  • Head lice do not carry disease, however there are secondary dangers that cause concern including infection, severe burns, allergic reaction, and even death.
  • If done improperly or carelessly, home treatments can kill.
  • Super Lice  is just a term for lice that are resistant to OTC treatment products.    
  • Hairsprays and gels do not prevent lice.
